The place
Fingals is hard to describe, which makes this bit tricky. It’s a rambling estate with a river running through it and a cluster of converted barns and mill buildings all turned into characterful places to stay. There’s a joy to just strolling around and taking it all in, with your dog trotting alongside as you explore the lawns and woodland, track down the tennis court, snooker room and the pool (water, not baize). You’ll almost certainly meet other guests and their dogs, so it’s one for the more sociable members of both species, but your cottage is a calming space, full of beams and books, that you can retreat to when needed. Nearby are great dog friendly beaches and owners Richard and Sheila have a few lesser-known favourites they can point you towards. Throw in a visit to the Ferry Boat Inn at Dittisham, with great views and a dog-friendly attitude, and you’ve got a stay that’ll give you a varied and memorable few days.
