Why we love it

A two-mile long dog-friendly beach, great hiking and local pubs, plus a hot tub on the deck for when you come home pleasantly exhausted

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • Two miles of dog-friendly beach round the corner at Putsborough
  • Having the freedom of the enclosed balcony
  • Throws so they can jump up on the sofa with you

Humans will love

  • The magical design with multi-level terrace
  • The outdoor hot tub on the deck
  • Coastal walking and beach days

The place

Unusual places like Hideaway are the sort of thing you get all excited about staying in before finding out they aren’t dog-friendly, but you and your dog will both love this innovative, curved treehouse. Before you even reach the main space you’ll find the terrace, with its swinging chair seat in the corner under dappled shade. Then it’s upstairs to the bedroom and lounge where you can all slump on the sofa thanks to the throws for the dogs or stretch out on the balcony, although the hot tub on the deck is really for humans only. The surrounding area is an AONB and a wonderfully peaceful place to stroll, while there’s plenty of stunning coastal hiking and the two-mile dog-friendly beach at Putsborough (voted The Times’ best beach in 2021) to fill your days with adventure.

In the neighbourhood

  • The grounds themselves are home to tennis courts, giant chess, a games room and plenty more, including pigs, goats and chickens to visit (but not chase)
  • Your dog might not appreciate the art on show at Broomhill Sculpture Gardens, but they can snuffle round (on a lead) while you enjoy the range of pieces hidden among the foliage
  • The twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth are a great base for hikes inland along the river and back down the coast path, as well as being joined by the famous cliff railway
  • The beaches at Putsborough, Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton are very popular and all have car parks if you would prefer not to walk down the coastal paths
  • Head inland for a real change of scenery on Exmoor, where you might catch sight of the eponymous ponies
  • Nearby Dunster Castle is a great dog-friendly day out, with not only the nature trails and scenery you’d expect at most National Trust places, but the chance to sample some great doggy ice cream!
