Why we love it

The peaceful forest setting and great local walks, a local distillery and cheese maker, a homely space with a warm sun room for afternoon naps

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • Exercising in the woods around the cottage
  • Napping in the warmth of the sun room
  • The local dog-friendly beaches

Humans will love

  • Visiting the neighbouring cheese producer and whisky distillery
  • Dropping into Aberaeron or Cardigan for dinner
  • Waking up to birdsong in the surrounding trees

The place

This little cottage has sort of sprung up in the forest over the years, with the original 70s restoration being added to by a resident carpenter in the 80s and the glass extension appearing a few years ago. Even the woodland that surrounds it is the result of extensive planting by the owners in the 90s. It all amounts to an incredible place where you’ll sit surrounded by birdsong and natural beauty for a few relaxing days. Dogs will love being able to roam the woods (although you’ll need to have them on lead if you visit certain parts of the farm) and there are brilliant hikes right from the door, with something for every ability. The glass sun room is perfect for post-walk naps and if you leave the windows open in the mezzanine bedroom, you’ll be woken by a riotous dawn chorus from the surrounding trees.

In the neighbourhood

  • In the cottage there are maps of all the local walks but a favourite of owner Irma is the circular route from the lodge door and down into the valley
  • For a great meal out in any weather, head for Cardigan’s pizza tipi right on the water. It’s dog-friendly of course and if you’re lucky you might catch one of their music nights
  • There are plenty of beaches that allow dogs in winter, but for year-round access head to Aberporth, where the western section is open to pets with no restrictions
  • Irma's neighbours have a cheese farm & distillery and a gallery. You can book a guided tour online if you are interested in seeing how the distillery works, although dogs are not allowed in some of the production areas
  • Aberaeron is a beautiful harbour town with colourful Regency style houses. Have lunch at the award-winning Harbourmaster followed by honey ice cream at the Hive and a walk along the beach. The section north of the groynes is dog-friendly year round
  • Irma is always happy for help in the garden with the plants, the bees and the chickens, although you’ll almost certainly end up sampling produce for one or the other during your stay
