    Why we love it

The great strand of Putsborough beach just half a mile away, great dog-friendly pubs, fabulous estate grounds to explore and cosy dog blankets to come home to

    What you'll love

    Dogs will love

    • The two-mile-long dog-friendly beach at Putsborough
    • Exploring the six acres of woodland walks on site
    • Being warmly welcomed in the Rock Inn

    Humans will love

    • The tennis court, croquet lawn and other entertainment on the estate
    • The cosiness of the mezzanine bedroom
    • Setting off on the coast path right from the door

    The place

What used to be Pickwell Manor’s laundry house has been converted into this calming and casual bolthole, great for couples looking for a bit of quiet time. You can idle on the estate, where you’ll find croquet, tennis and giant chess as well as a fire pit space, or find adventure all around. Putsborough Beach was voted The Times’ Best Beach in 2021 and is dog friendly all year round, but others, such as Lee Bay, offer brilliant rockpooling or perfect picnic spots in echoing coves reached down old smuggler’s tracks at low tide. The ferry over to Lundy Island leaves from Ilfracombe and Exmoor, with its dramatic landscape and wild ponies, is just around the corner, but this is a great place to turn up, ditch the car and spend a few days on foot and in no hurry to get anywhere at all.

    You should know

    • The mezzanine bedroom is great, but the ladder up is quite steep and may not suitable for those with restricted mobility
    • Some of the narrow lanes around Pickwell will challenge your reversing skills
    • The garden is hedged but not fenced in so escape artist dogs might be able to get out
    • The owners have a border terrier that you may see when exploring the site
    • Dogs aren't allowed on furniture, but there's a cosy blanket provided to settle on instead

    In the neighbourhood

    • The Rock Inn, a 25-minute walk. A dog-friendly pub with menus made up of fresh local produce, real ales and an expansive wine list
    • Your dog might not appreciate the art on show at Broomhill Sculpture Gardens, but they can snuffle round (on a lead) while you enjoy the range of pieces hidden among the foliage
    • The twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth are a great base for hikes inland along the river and back down the coast path, as well as being joined by the famous cliff railway
    • The beaches at Croyde (dog friendly from October to April) and Woolacombe (some dog restrictions in summer) are both popular, but Saunton and Putsborough are dog friendly all year round. All of them have easy access and parking
    • At Barricane Beach is the famous beach café that serves great Sri Lankan food that you can take down onto the sand to eat. A brilliant end to a day of sun and sea
    • Nearby Dunster Castle is a great dog-friendly day out, with not only the nature trails and scenery you’d expect at most National Trust places, but the chance to sample some great doggy ice cream!
