    Why we love it

Just a short drive to the coast, and surrounded by South Devon AONB, it’s hard to know whether to explore, or spend all day in the two-person hammock and the hot tub

    What you'll love

    Dogs will love

    • Taking a tour of the grounds on the wooded walk that encircles the estate
    • Washing their muddy paws in the dog wash station
    • Sniffing out the treats left for them inside

    Humans will love

    • Not having to take turns in the two-person hammock
    • Eyeing the hot tub over an al fresco dinner
    • Having to resort to best of 12 in the communal games barn

    The place

Beech Shepherd’s Lodge is identical to her sister huts in one key regard, she’s equipped with far more than you could ask for. Though the interior is carefully crafted, with a modern kitchen, a wood burner for the cooler nights, and a king size bed to finally collapse into at days end, the exterior is where you’ll naturally gravitate to. Here you’ll find yourself snacking and grazing at the al fresco dining table, only popping out from under the parasol shade to lounge in the two-person hammock, or fetch more wood to heat the hot tub. Take it easy with laps of the site on the wooded walk around the circumference of the estate and tire out your four-legged friend or, if you’re brimming with adventurous energy, seek out the River Dart a mile away, or the many beaches just a short drive down the road.

    You should know

    • Some paths on site are quite steep and might not suit those with mobility issues
    • As the bunk room cabin is a separate building, you'll need to decide whether you want to allow the kids to sleep there on their own. There's a camera intercom linking back to the main hut to keep an eye and ear on them.

    In the neighbourhood

    • The Sportsman’s Arms, a short walk away at the end of the road, is very dog friendly, as is the Ferry Boat Inn in Dittisham, a mile and a half or so to the east
    • The Dartmouth Steam Railway, which runs nearby, is your chance to chug along on a piece of history. If your dog doesn’t mind the whistle and rattle, they can join you for the price of a £2 dog ticket. The steam network connects Dartmouth, Totnes, Paignton, Torquay, Brixham and Kingswear, and some routes allow you to “steam & cruise” going out by train and back by boat
    • Dartmoor is a fantastic place to explore even though dogs need to be kept on leads thanks to ground nesting birds, wild ponies and grazing livestock. There are informative, scenic and dog-friendly walks available through the company Moorland Guides
    • This being coastal Devon, there are plenty of beaches to choose from, but a local favourite for dogs is Strete Gate, which has no restrictions at any time of year, so the only private places you need to keep out of are those of the nudists who frequent the northern end
    • The National Trust property of Coleton Fishacre has a stunning garden that rights down to the coast. You can arrive the normal way, through the car park, or hike to it along the coastal path and up to the café for refreshment. Dogs need to be kept on leads and can’t go into the main house, but it’s still a lovely way to snuffle up an hour or two
    • Totnes is already a lovely town to pop into, but when the market’s on, it’s a must-see. The town square fills with stalls selling food and produce, the air with delicious smells. There’s no actual rule that your dog needs to be on a lead, but unless you want to wrestle it back out of the remains of a charcuterie stand, it might be a good idea.
