The place
Taking its name from the Anglo-Scottish border, Border View Cottage is perched just a couple of miles from Scotland in the last stretch of English wild. Under ten miles from the sea, you could spend your days wandering coastal walks as easily as strolls in the local patchwork fields. The cottage itself is also well set up for hiking, with a large boot room to ease the transition from countryside ambles to cosy slouching about in fireside seats. Should you or the dog be homebodies, there’s still plenty to enjoy whilst going nowhere. Wake up to a large garden for morning stretches, with an al fresco table for sunny lunches. Cook up the best of Northumberland’s farm shops in the modern kitchen – and retire to the lounge and snuggle on the sofa with the dog (on a blanket). Whether you’re an adventurer or sofa snuggler – end the day in the wood-fired hot tub, under the stars.
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the door: Turn right out of the cottage and head towards the farm. Follow the signs for 'river access'. Walk the footpath down to the river. The river is numbered 1-15 for the fishermen, so follow the river right, until ‘Pool 14’, then turn right, back through the woodland and round back to the cottage. The 'loop' walk is 40 mins
- Spittal Beach, 20-minute drive: Just a short hop in the car away, Spittal Beach is perfect for dogs, welcoming them all year round. Spend a morning or an afternoon on the sands and then head into Berwick-on-Tweed for a pit stop!
- The Black Bull, 10-minute drive: Northumberland’s only thatched pub, The Black Bull is not just a historic landmark, it’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and try not to look at the big hungry eyes of the dog
- Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, 35-minute drive: If you’ve the nature loving kind of hound, head over to Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve to take in the nature and beaches (just keep the dog on a short lead).
