In the neighbourhood

  • It’s just a half-hour drive to Wye Valley Sculpture Garden from Box Barn. The vision of artist Gemma Kate Wood, the garden has been shaped over three generations of the Wood family, all the way back to the 1950s. Originally an organically run smallholding, it recently won a sustainable venue award. They welcome well-behaved dogs on leads, and as long as they, in their own words ‘do not eat people’
  • At a similar distance, you could head out to Piercefield Woods, where you’ll have access to 82 hectares of nature reserve to explore with your hound! With three kilometres of riverside track to follow, Chepstow Castle nearby and plenty of woodland, it’s the perfect day out for you and your dog. Just be sure to bring a towel if your dog likes a splash
  • If you’re feeling up to it, take a three-mile wander to Raglan, and take a look. It’s an incredible example of an almost intact castle, and dogs are very welcome, as long as they’re on a lead and kept to the ground floor levels of the site
  • Abergavenny’s just round the corner at a 17-minute drive. With a large market on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, as well as Flea Markets on Wednesdays – it’s perfect to spend a day out either on the hunt for some incredible local ingredients for dinner, a spot of retail therapy, or even just some presents for those back at home
  • If your four-legged friend’s the large kind, then they might well appreciate a long walk somewhere challenging. The Sugar Loaf Walk, found 24 minutes away is perfect. One of the highest peaks in The Black Mountains, it’s perfect for stretching legs and tuckering you out for the day. With panoramic views across South Wales, The Brecon Beacons, and south-west England, it’s a great adventure
  • Take on Blorenge Walk from the Goose and Cuckoo pub. It's a peak in the Brecon Beacons National Park, reaching 561m, with surrounding heather moorland. Explore The Punchbowl on the lower hill, a nature reserve managed by the Woodland Trust. With Skirrid Mountain to the east, on clear days you can also see Pen y Fan.
