The place
Strolling through the open-plan kitchen and dining room and crunching out onto the gravel terrace at Brownber Hall makes you feel like landed gentry, but there’s an earthy homeliness to the Victorian country house. It’s perfect for a big reunion, with lively meals indoors or out as you plan or review the day’s adventures, but space for everyone to drift off to the big bedrooms for some quiet time when they need it. There are plenty of warm spots for dogs and humans to nap and simply endless possibilities for tiring yourself out, with walks and cycles in the Lakes, Dales and local fells that run from scenic routes across viaducts to testing, twisting climbs ending in stunning viewpoints or welcoming dog-friendly pubs.
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the Door: Two footpaths run along Brownber Estate, the Coast to Coast footpath and the Dales High Way. Follow the on site signs, and speak to the owner for local maps as there are variety of different paths to explore
- The Black Swan, 5-minute drive: A well-stocked bar, award-winning food, and dogs warmly welcomed – what more could you ask for? Pop in for a spot of lunch, or dinner, and try not to look under the table at the wide hungry eyes.
- Brough Castle, 20-minutes: Explore this dog-friendly castle, once a Roman fort. Pop dogs on leads whilst in the grounds, as there can be livestock, particularly during lambing season.
- Smardale Gill Viaduct, 20-minutes: Offering gentle old railway line routes, take the dog for a quick stroll and enjoy the phenomenal views through this dramatic valley, and be back in time to finish off the day at one of the local pubs! There can be sheep on the trails, so be sure to lead up where appropriate.
