Why we love it

Walks straight from the front door, a firepit for toasty stargazing, and a BBQ for lazy summer evenings. Pop out to the stream nearby for a wild dip!

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • All the walks straight from the front door
  • Playing around in the enclosed garden
  • Hoovering under the tables at the nearby dog-friendly pubs

Humans will love

  • The access to wild spaces, swimming, hiking and biking
  • Diving nose first into the fresh sourdough left out for you
  • Losing all concept of time in the wet room with rain shower

The place

You’ll find Bullghyll right at the very top of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, just below the North Pennines AONB, and just ten or so miles to the east of The Lake District. The apex of these wild spaces, you’d wrongly imagine a spartan dwelling, instead you find a well-designed and carefully curated interior. On rainier days, take the time to eye the attention to detail architect and designer Georgina Rose (former architect of Soho House) has installed in her renovations, whilst you thumb through one of the books from the bustling bookshelves, in the comfort of your armchair by the wood burner. On sunnier days, keep one eye on the BBQ, and one on the ponies in the field behind, as the rest of the guests hop from summerhouse to garden table, eagerly waiting.

In the neighbourhood

  • The town of Kirkby Stephen is a five-minute drive away and has everything you’d need to stock up. There’s a Spar, a Co-op, a few coffee shops and petrol stations – and even an EV charging point. If you can’t bear to cook, stop off at the couple of takeaways, or to The Black Bull, which is dog friendly
  • If in search of some busier streets, and wider shopping options, take the half-hour drive to Penrith and check out either Brougham or Penrith Castle. Or if you’re peckish pop into The Narrowbar Café for a spot of lunch, dog-friendly and with an ever-changing menu of homemade food – it’s a great pit stop
  • Further to the south, there’s the town of Kendal, where there are yet more shops, in fact a whole shopping centre, a castle and the Brewery Arts centre, home to two cinemas, a drama studio, galleries, a theatre and, best of all, a dog-friendly restaurant/bar
  • Bullgyhll’s proximity to the Lake District can’t be ignored, and at under an hour’s drive to Windermere and 45 minutes to Ullswater, there’s plenty of wild swimming, canoeing, kayaking and all manner of fun out on the lakes
  • In walking distance, you’ll find The Black Bull at Nateby, a 40-minute stroll across the fields, and The Fat Lamb a similar time in the opposite direction, both dog-friendly and well worth the visit.
  • If in the mood to explore, there’s the tiny Lammerside Castle nearby, one to visit on a dog walk, as well as numerous streams and little ponds for wild swimming and the impressive Wharton Hall just up the road, a 17th century manor house.
