Why we love it

Cleugh Foot looks out on incredible views, but you might be too busy admiring what you can see indoors: cosy wood burners, gorgeous design, and a hot tub in prime position

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • The incredible locale to explore
  • Sniffing out their bowls
  • Cuddling on the blanket by the wood burner

Humans will love

  • The massive kitchen to craft food to eat under the pergola
  • Star-spotting from the hot tub out back
  • Arranging celebration packages, or campfire packages for their arrival

The place

You don’t just get the cosy cottage of Cleugh Foot (pronounced 'clue') when you book, you get access to the buckets of private parkland, woodland and more! You’re right next to the Anglo-Scottish border, so you’ll be unsurprised to learn, you’re surrounded by walks in every direction, whether that’s a simple country stroll, or something a little heartier at the nearby Solway Coast AONB, or the Kielder Forest Park. Back at your space, the cottage sits beautifully in the surrounding trees and patchwork fields like something out of a dream getaway, with stylish interiors, rainfall showers and deep bathtubs for the day’s end. You won’t care what the weather’s doing outside when days out are easy, and days in look like cuddles by the wood burner with your four-legged favourite. Out back you’ll find a pergola for al fresco dining when the sun shines, and a wood-fired hot tub, for when the sky turns starlit.

In the neighbourhood

  • If you’re wanting to load up on supplies, there are plenty of places nearby to go grab some. If you head to Longtown, there’s a serviceable Spar, however, if you prefer the smaller, more bespoke shops, there’s Kirkups, a family-run butcher on Swan Street, Longtown as well as Cochranes, a veg shop near Longtown
  • There are plenty of places to take a walk nearby, one great one is the river Esk – just cross the suspension bridge and follow the river up the old Wavereley Line in a loop. The river is commercially let to fishermen from February to the end of October, and it is fine for you to walk on the other side, but sadly no swimming is allowed
  • Carlisle’s the nearest city to here, at 25 minutes away, and is great for a quick trip out. You can take a tour of the city and its architecture, untouched by the WW2 bombings, unlike the south of the country. Pop into one of the many dog-friendly pubs for a quick pit stop, and some waggy tails poking out from under the tables. Head to either the Howard Arms or The Griffin, for a particularly warm welcome
  • Take the drive out to Kershope Forest, which is half an hour’s drive northeast. It’s an incredible place, with pine forest looming over rough tundra-like terrain, that your dog will adore exploring for its many smells, and long tracks to sprint down. You can take the full 11-mile route, or something shorter to suit your needs
  • The Lake District is just a 50-minute drive away, so you can take a trip out in the morning and get a full day of exploration done easily. There are lakes, mountains and forests to take on with your hound, and even more activities to take part in – many of which allow dogs to join in – so sea-faring pups can take a crack at kayaking!
  • There’s nothing like a windswept coastal walk – and you’re in luck here! A 40-minute drive away, you’ll find the Solway Coast AONB. With 118km to explore, there’s more than just one day out. There’s the coastal path to stomp along, dunes and salt marshes, as well as Silloth West Beach, just below the AONB, which is dog friendly all year round.
