Why we love it

Hidden in 20 acres of North Devon AONB, there’s a hot tub, private terrace, and enclosed garden to while away a few days

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • Exploring the grounds to find all the hidden sniffs
  • Taking laps of the enclosed garden
  • Chomping at the water in the outdoor warm dog shower

Humans will love

  • Toasting marshmallows on the firepit
  • Watching movies on the projector in the bedroom
  • Making pizza in the wood fired oven

The place

You’ll be spoilt for choice at Cosy Cowshed, as to how to spend your downtime. Crash on the sofa, whilst someone else makes use of the modern and well-equipped kitchen to cook something fancy, to enjoy inside or out on the deck. If not, take a couple of leisurely hours to enjoy making pizzas al fresco, and eye the wood fired Hikki hot tub, or the hammock down the steps in the enclosed garden space – both ideal for a post meal nap. The grounds at the Sleepy Owl Estate leave six acres to explore, and another 14 acres of private woodland adjacent to tire out any bounding pups, or greying old boys alike. A short walk to the village, you can also take your dog to explore, and pick up supplies for back at home, as well as trekking the various walks there are to seek out, right from the doorstep. There’s plenty to do as night falls, and you might have to flip a coin to decide between movie night, on the bedroom projector, or a glass of something in the hanging basket chair – overseeing and taste testing all marshmallow roasting on the firepit.

In the neighbourhood

  • Being right on the edge of Devon, by the border to Cornwall, the Sleepy Owl Estate is placed in the middle of a goldmine of wild spaces. You can head to either Sandymouth beach 20 minutes away, Crooklet's Beach 30 minutes away or Saunton Sands 54 minutes away – all dog friendly all year round. There are however, plenty more beaches nearby, just check seasonal restrictions on when dogs are allowed
  • You can take the half hour drive down to the Tamar Lakes near Kilkhampton and spend the day trying out some water sports on the lake, including kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and fishing. You’ll need to keep your dog on a lead, and out of the water – as the blue green algae can be dangerous for them!
  • Take a drive out to the coastline, and walk the length of the coast, from Blackchurch Rock to the visually stunning Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall, which trails off of the nearby rolling hills, and down to the sea
  • There’s a number of village pubs in walking distance, The Hart inn, The King’s Arms, and The Anchor – all serving classic pub fare, and dog friendly
  • There’s also many pubs and restaurants within driving distance that are worth the extra miles, there’s The Royal George in Appledore – 33 minutes away, renowned for both its incredible position on the seafront, and its mouth-watering menu. There’s also the Johns of Instow café, serving locally roasted coffee, traditional to adventurous fare and both, very dog friendly
  • This section of the Hartland Devon Heritage coast is an hour’s walk away and there’s streams, hills and fields to explore with your four-legged friend. You’ll be lost for where to start.
