Why we love it

More walks than humanly possible to complete, just a short drive to the Northumberland National Park, and a 30-minute drive to the coast

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • Not rationing the treats left out for them
  • Smell testing the fields, moors, and hills all around
  • Making hungry-sad eyes in the dog-friendly pubs nearby

Humans will love

  • Traipsing the stately grounds
  • The access to the Northumberland wild from the front door
  • The double-ended bath in the bathroom

The place

Part of the Brinkburn Manor House estate, Cuthbert House is one of four terraced houses making up the Gardeners’ Cottages next to the main building. So, you might see the owner’s dogs amble by! Resting next to the Coquet River, Brinkburn has access to the best of the Northern wild. With walks, rambles and hikes encircling the entire estate, linking up, and stretching beyond no neighbouring historic towns and villages. You can plan jaunts as long or short as you please, taking the time to stop by dog-friendly pubs and restaurants to sample their local and seasonal menus. If you’ve got a restful stay in mind, make use of your enclosed garden out the front of the space, with a view of the fields and grounds, or make a leisurely lunch in the modern kitchen. The late afternoon might look like a stroll on the grounds, whilst late evening could be as simple as being curled up on the plush leather sofa, dog and you basking in the wood burner glow.

In the neighbourhood

  • The nearby historic market town of Rothbury has a range of dog-friendly restaurants, pubs, interesting independent shops, and even an art gallery. Head to the east side of Rothbury to hop across the river on stepping stones on a gentle circular walk
  • The stunning town of Alnwick is home to Alnwick Castle, made famous by the Harry Potter films. On the grounds, you'll find a cherry orchard, bamboo labyrinth and one of the largest treehouses in the world – which houses the dog-friendly café
  • Cragside House, Gardens & Estate, is a 13-minute drive away, with man-made lakes, beautiful waterfalls and a 1000-acre estate to explore. Your dog's allowed in all outdoor spaces, the shop, and the dog seating area in the tearoom – but only assistance dogs are allowed in the house!
  • Visit Linhope Spout Waterfall, in the Cheviot hills, to watch the 18-metre torrent plough into the ‘bottomless’ plunge pot or stroll to the hidden ponds of Wooler Common. If you’ve got the energy, take on The Cheviot, the highest point in Northumberland. Explore the rest of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park – and stargaze in the unpolluted night sky
  • There are quite a few historic buildings near the Brinkburn Priory, many castles, estates and ancient structures – and it’d be hard to name them all! However, many do allow dogs on leads on the property (though not inside the buildings themselves). You could go and explore Etal Castle to the north, or Edlingham Castle – just a 20-minute drive away, both welcome on-lead dogs on the grounds
  • If you’re looking for food, just around the corner you’ll find The Village Inn, an award-winning pub serving traditional pub meals with some street food twists. Using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, The Angler’s Arms – also in Longframlington, is a great option too. With an extensive drinks menu, including cocktails, and an equally full food menu, The Queen’s head in Rothbury is also a lovely spot. Still in Rothbury, there’s also The Turk’s Head, which is just around the corner. It’s a classic pub, serving traditional pub grub, with a large beer garden out back – for two and four-legged types alike
