The place

Set in the North Pennines AONB, you couldn’t find a better space in this region to host six for a trip away, walking dogs in the wonderful rolling hills. An hour from Carlisle and an hour and a half from Newcastle, it’s the perfect distance from the city to escape. With walks from the front door and a lovely spacious cottage all to yourselves to laze around in, you’re spoilt for choice. Whether you’re taking it easy, and enjoying what’s at your place, or going further out to explore, you’ll find a few commonalities. Either way, you’ll love breakfast al fresco with the dog, sitting down to dinner after cooking on the wood-burning stove, or finishing the day melting into the sofa with your four-legged pal, aiming your feet at the wood burner and dozing off.

You should know

  • There's no livestock on site but it is a rural area, so livestock have been known to make themselves at home if you leave the gate open!
  • The rustic stone floors, steep stairs and rural footpaths may not be suitable for younger guests or those with limited mobility
  • The bunk room is downstairs so is best suited for older children

  • Get out and explore the quaint village of Garrigill, within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A picturesque haven for walking enthusiasts, it’s an untouched landscape of patchwork fields. With moorlands, rolling hills, and rivers meandering through, it offers a tranquil setting for peaceful dog-friendly strolls, making every visit a stunning wander through wide open vistas.
  • The Killhope Lead Mining Museum, found just 20 minutes down the road, provides a rich historical experience for visitors. Known for its dog-friendly site, the museum offers an array of activities suitable for all ages, from intriguing museum tours, engaging art and drama events, to fascinating wildlife walks. Note that dogs must be leashed and can't access certain areas.
  • A trip to Hadrian's Wall and Epiacum Roman Fort is a fascinating experience for first-time visitors. After exploring the sites, unwind with a spot of brunch at The Nook, a dog-friendly café, and finish your day out with a leisurely walk along the picturesque South Tynedale railway, providing an incredible view of the North Pennines scenery.
  • The Cumberland Inn welcome dogs and promises traditional pub food, and a terrace for sunny days. If you’re looking for somewhere to go for a pit stop between exploring, have a coffee break at one of the South Tynedale Railway's charming stations.
  • The Hive at Nenthead, a meticulously restored Methodist chapel, boasts a stunning setting with an art gallery, a craft shop, and a café. It's an ideal destination for brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, or just a coffee break. Keep an eye out for their evening food and music events, for extra special evenings in their beautiful premises. They even offer a biscuit and a bed for your four-legged friend!
  • Enjoy a tranquil walk from Gatecroft to the breathtaking Ashgill Force Waterfall, a short but scenic journey that isn’t too challenging. Follow the public footpath with the South Tyne by your side, and navigate a few stiles to behold this massive, and rather magical waterfall. Once you get back, carry on enjoying nature – and as night falls, immerse yourself in stargazing under Garrigill's renowned Dark Sky.
