Why we love it

Riverside, mountain views, and epic amounts of space to stretch out. Bring everyone, dog included, to this perfect spot by the Black Mountains

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • Bounding about in the enclosed garden
  • Taking a wild swim in the river with you
  • Napping everywhere on the underfloor heating

Humans will love

  • Hiring a paddleboard from the owners to explore the River Wye
  • Needing no reason to luxuriate in the incredible bathroom
  • Feasting with friends in the conservatory

The place

Glasbury River Cottage is a great spot to bring the whole pack, with plenty of room to lounge about, and a big balcony to enjoy sunsets from. Pad about on heated floors and luxuriate in the bathroom with a massive walk-in shower and deep roll-top bath. Idle by windows or at the al fresco dining table and stare off towards the mountains. And, if you’ve rented paddleboards, explore the River Wye and float downstream. Back indoors, you might feel like crashing on a sofa with the dog (as long as they’re on a blanket) or making use of the huge kitchen. But if you can’t bear to give up the outdoors completely, there’s a bar and BBQ area, a nearby firepit and, best of all, the conservatory straight out of a photoshoot. It’s the perfect place to congregate for a feast and forget the time.

In the neighbourhood

  • You simply can’t stay this close to Hay-on-Wye and not visit! At just under a 15-minute drive, it’s around the corner and has a lot to offer for a day out. With 20 bookshops, plenty of restaurants, modern and timeless shops and even great delis – there’s a lot to do and see. Take the time and wander the streets with the hound in tow.
  • Talgarth and Brecon are also nearby, both under a half-hour drive and offer classic market town days out. Discover the bounty of the nearby fields, finding local cheeses, meat and artisan crafts on offer. Or of course, excellent pub lunches and café visits with the dog.
  • You’re positioned just above the northeast section of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, with just a 20-minute drive to Pwll y Wrach Nature Reserve for wanders amongst the bluebells at the right time of year, or even tours of the woods to find the waterfall! Alternatively drive over to the base of Waun Fach, for a crack at a smaller mountain!
  • It’s just an eight-minute drive or an hour’s walk to The Old Railway Line Garden Centre over the River Wye. Garden centres are a joy at the best of times, let alone when the shop in question has literally thousands of plants on offer. The shop and tearooms are dog friendly! So, you can adopt a new green member of the family to take home and pick up a treat for the dog at the same time.
  • An important step in any holiday is finding the local flavour. You can find it in many spots, with local cafés sporting coffee from local roasters, or the incredible restaurants in nearby towns serving the local produce – but there’s another, unmissable way. Head to either Sobremesa or Antur Taprooms, both under a half hour’s drive, and worth every minute for a glass of the freshest local flavour.
  • Visit The Welsh Venison Centre in Bwlch. There are incredible views of the mountains, specially produced venison, as well as their own lamb, beef and locally produced meat, and more! They have a team of butchers on site to advise you how to prepare the food, as well as a shop for gifts and homewares.
