The place

There aren’t many locations better than this for breathing deep, easy, relaxed sighs. With its spot right next to a river, just outside the town of Brecon in Wales – God’s Pocket is the perfect spot for you and the dog to get your fair share of country living for a few days. This scenic little cottage has everything you’ll need to spoil the dog and plenty for you too, a walk-in shower for washing off after, a modern kitchen for cooking up the spoils of farm shops and market towns that you’ll find nearby – and a sofa to cuddle up with the dog and ‘just rest your eyes for a minute’. There’s even a firepit to settle down by as evening draws in, and toast to a spot well found, and well enjoyed!

In the neighbourhood

  • Walk from the door: Hop over the stile at the end of the drive, and follow the banks of the River Usk, with the Aqueduct in the distance as your goal. Follow the wooded path (with your dog on the lead) to find The Royal Oak pub. From the cottage to the pub takes about 1.5 hours, depending on your pace.
  • Llanfaes Dairy, 8-minute drive: Take a quick trip to Brecon town centre for ice cream and sorbets that are second to none, with delicious flavours that seem to chop and change like the Welsh weather. Take it in turns to watch the dog, and then take a wander down the promenade
  • The Dragon’s Back, 20-minute drive: Drive on over to the Brecon Beacons for a hearty climb, and stunning views (one for the fitter two and four-legged kinds)
  • Peterstone Court, 10-minute walk: Stroll just over the road to the Peterstone Court Country House and Spa for seasonal food, expertly prepared using the local larder. There is a beautiful bar and lovely terrace where you can enjoy lunch, dinner or afternoon teas. Remember to call ahead if you have a dog with you!
