The place
Just a 20-minute walk from the Welsh border, Hawthorn Cabin is perched on a sheep farm, looking like a daydream. Around you are tumbling valleys, tall pines – and endless walks to take the dog out to burn off some energy. Your cabin has ample room for two (plus a four-legged guest of course), and you’ll spend arrival wondering if you should enjoy a swing in the hammocks on the deck first, or just get straight to exploring. You can head straight from the cabin on a walk, led nose-first by your hound, or drive a little further afield to explore the local towns and restaurants – perhaps to pick up something to cook on the BBQ. When everyone’s done for the day, if it’s sunny, you’ll be out on deckchairs and round the firepit into the evening – or on cooler nights, snuggled by the crackling wood burner, with a snoring dog.
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the door: Turn right out of the site gate and head to the riding stables at the bottom of the road, turn right, then left after the farm. Follow this road and after about 2 miles, you’ll see some cars parked in the lay-by to your right with a little footpath through the trees to your left – your dogs can be off lead here and there is a large flat old racecourse that can be explored. Then return the way you came
- The Docks, 15-minute drive: Serving fine ales since 1840, The Docks knows how to pull a proper pint. Head on over for some classic pub fare and real local ales – and take a seat by the fire with a hound by your feet
- Chirk, 25-minute drive: Head over to the town of Chirk to explore for the day. With an Aqueduct to find, a castle to explore and the town to grab a bite to eat – all perfect for the two and four-legged
- The Old School House, 25-minute drive: You’re welcome to visit during the day with your dog here, at this award-winning café/bar/restaurant. Perfect to explore local Oswestry with a spot to settle down for a pit stop after.
