    The place

This is a gorgeous part of Cornwall to spend a few days in. Not just the southern coast, which tends to be the quieter side of the county, but the grand estate of Boconnoc itself, which feels like a world of its own. There are great walks through the many parts of the land where you can let dogs off the lead and the coastal path, beaches or the banks of the river Fowey for scenic days out. At the heart of it all is the impressive Boconnoc estate, with the Head Groom’s House one building in what’s almost its own village. Several other parts of the estate are let and you might meet other guests as you come and go or if you use the communal laundry room, but you’ll have your place all to yourself. Its classic country style has splashes of contemporary colour here and there and it’s a space where you arrive, choose your sofa, settle the dog by the wood burner and feel instantly at home.

    In the neighbourhood

    • Nearby Lantic Bay has wonderful calm waters and is a favourite local wild swimming spot. Dogs are permitted all year but there are often nearby livestock, so take care.
    • Polkerris beach is another local favourite. Although dogs are only permitted from 1st October until Good Friday, it’s worth a visit then just for Sam’s, where you can eat al fresco from a menu heavy on Cornish seafood and great wood-fired pizza
    • Fowey has a few good places to eat but Appleton’s gets a particular recommendation for its Italian-inspired food and for being dog-friendly
    • The village of Lerryn is a lovely spot for a walk along the river or even a paddle down it if you’ve brought your gear. There are some great pubs on the route, of course.
    • Lostwithiel is great for picking up souvenirs with a bit of character, thanks to a good clutch of antique and lifestyle shops such as Alice in Scandiland and Watts Trading
