The place

Honeysuckle Cottage is an idyllic stay in Cornwall with exposed beams lining the ceilings and sills, an open-hearth fire, and a four-poster bed -- it doesn’t get more quintessentially British than this. Spend your time lunching al fresco, with a view over the rolling fields, where you have your own secluded garden, with the sound of a babbling stream nearby and the cottage’s namesake climbing the walls. Or relax on the sofa with a cream tea (jam first round these parts). There’s much to do on site, with the spa, pool and sauna, and though you’ll spot other guests as you enjoy the communal areas, there are around 150 acres of space to stretch your and your dog’s legs.

In the neighbourhood

  • There’s never been a shortage of pubs in Cornwall, and there very much still isn’t. if you’re in the mood to dine fireside with a pint of something local, you’ve got some great options. Just a couple of miles up the road you’ll find The Plough at Duloe where great local seafood is as common as bowls for the dog. There’s also Ye Olde Salutation Inn just three or so miles away for another great experience
  • If you’re still hunting for classic Cornish fare, then there are yet more eateries and cafés in easy reach. Head to Island View Café for a seaside lunch, where the food is as colourful as the setting. Go to nearby Samphire Beach, pick up a bucket to grab litter, and get a free ice cream on return!
  • If there’s one thing as good as a meal with a view, it’s a meal paired with a stretch of the legs. If you take a half-hour drive to the north, you can get to Siblyback Lake, which offers a great 3.5-mile circular walk, as well as kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding with equipment hire, as well as self-launch with your own kit. Best of all, there’s Olive & Co. Café on the east side, for fantastic local food and high-quality coffee
  • It might be just over an hour away, but The Lost Gardens of Heligan are always worth a visit. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome year-round, and you can tour the 200 acres to discover the various gardens on site, like the Jungle, Pleasure grounds, or Productive Garden. If you're feeling peckish, there’s the Heligan Kitchen on site, where they serve their own fresh produce – including their own home-reared meat
  • Hop in the car with the hound and drive a half hour northwest to Cardinham Woods. There’s a lot going on here, you might spot little shelters in the woods for the forest school, or mountain bikers whizzing through the treeline on the trails, and if you have a young one yourself there’s even a special interactive trail. For the average walker, there are plenty of lovely trails to take on with the dog, and even an off-road mobility scooter to hire if you’re someone that struggles with the terrain
  • You can’t talk about Cornwall, without the mention of beaches. It’s just a 20-minute drive to Seaton Beach, 26 minutes to Lantic Bay to the west, or 25 minutes to the east you’ll find Whitsand Bay. All have some seasonal restrictions, so do check, but they can be the perfect place to wear out an energetic dog!
