Why we love it
Halfway between the moor and the sea, there’s adventures on land and water in easy reach, a reading nook for the afternoon, a firepit for sundown, a hot tub for the night
What you'll love
Dogs will love
- Long walks and big sniffs on the moors
- A paw rinse in the mud daddy
- Napping by the wood burner
Humans will love
- Finding the pubs in stumbling distance
- An afternoon in the reading nook
- Simmering in a Hikki hot tub
The place
It’s the same distance to the moor as it is the sea at House Martin – so you’re spoilt for choice. There are adventures to be had in every direction, with Totnes, Salcombe, Tamar Valley or Rame Head all ready for long strolls with the dog, and big sniffs on wooded trails and riverside walks. But once you’ve had your fill, or the dog’s finally out of steam, you’ve got the perfect spot to retire back to. Overlooking miles of patchwork fields, House Martin has huge bifold doors to take in the breeze and let out big sighs. There is a modern kitchen to craft any produce you’ve collected on days out, and recliners on deck to waddle to if you overdo it. As the afternoon whiles away, take a seat in the reading nook, and open a book with a crackling wood burner and dog-snores in the background. Then with the setting sun, enjoy an evening around the firepit with your faithful friend – who may look a little confused as you stew yourself in the Hikki hot tub.
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the door: Head left out of the gate, left at the bottom of the hill, past The Anchor Inn. Keep going up the hill, there is a set of steps and a footpath sign on the right. Follow the footpath signs to Ennaton Farm (dogs on leads through the yard) and turn left up the road. A short way up the road there is a left-hand footpath sign which will take you back to the village
- The Anchor, 7-minute walk: There’s nothing better than a pub in stumbling distance, so head down to The Anchor for a menu of world dishes all created from locally sourced ingredients, and a pint by the fire
- South Milton Sands, 30-minute drive: Managed by the National Trust, South Milton Sands is an incredible spot to take the dog for an afternoon of wild sprints. With no seasonal restrictions, it’s perfect all year round
- Dartmoor National Park, 10-minute drive: You’re right on the edge of the park here at House Martin, so a short drive can see you in the heart of it – ready to take on hill walks and hikes with an eager dog in tow (or yanking you along).
