The place

The Hut on the Hill couldn’t be in a more prime position in Gloucestershire. As the name suggests, it’s overlooking the rolling hills of the Wye Valley AONB, which starts almost ON the property! When you’re not admiring the views, you’ll be snuggling in the cosy bed, peacefully making cups of tea in the well-equipped kitchen, or even more likely ambling outside to spend an afternoon rocking in the wind in the hammock, eating a meal al-fresco on the outside table, or watching the sunset from the hot tub. If you head west, you’ll find the entirety of Wye to explore for riverside adventures, and to the east, The Forest of Dean – between the two, you and your dog will be spoilt for choice! No matter what you choose, there’s a spot by the firepit outside when it gets dark for two-legged guests to clink glasses, and a snug spot by their feet for the four-legged.

In the neighbourhood

  • If you’re in the mood to grab some food without hassle, then pop across the fields to the aptly named, Dog and Muffler just two and a half miles away. They get busy, so give them a ring before you go, and book if necessary. They’re dog friendly, and an easy 20-minute walk from your place
  • The dog-friendly eateries don’t stop there however, there’s also The New Inn in Shortstanding and The Saracen’s Head in Symonds Yat. Each cook up excellent pub grub, from classics to seasonal dishes alongside local beers by a roaring fire, and best of all – both are walkable from your place
  • You have the Forest of Dean in the Wye Valley AONB effectively as your back garden, so you won't be surprised to learn that there are a lot of walks for you and your dog. One of the best resources for checking them out is the Wye Valley tourism board, which suggests 12 easy walks to take on in the local area. Pick from ponds to riverside, to forest - whichever you choose, you won't regret
  • There is one set of walks that are particularly unique, and that’s Sculpture Trail at Beechenhurst's choice walks. They lead you through a series of forest paths that are bejewelled with sculptures from contemporary artists along the way – so if you’re in the mood for nature, and a little culture at the same thime – this is perfect for you. Best of all, you can pop into the Beechenhurst Café, and grab some dog biscuits for your four-legged companion
  • You’re barely .2 of a mile from the Wysis Way footpath, which is a 55-mile walking track that actually links the Offa’s Dyke Path and the Thames Path together. It starts in Monmouth to the west, and meanders through the countryside towards Gloucester and down towards Swindon. It’s a huge stretch of wild to explore, and it’s just round the corner!
  • Symonds Yat is little more than a hop, skip and a jump away. You could either take the car, and be there in less than 20 minutes, or you could enjoy the two-hour scenic walk that’d take you through woodland to the incredible riverside clearing that is Symonds Yat. Explore the area, take a peek in ancient caves and when you’ve tuckered out the hound, let them nap under the tables at a dog-friendly pub – and reward all that hard work.
