The place

Little Willow is one of the three beautifully hand-crafted shepherd’s huts at the 3 Little Huts site. This carefully designed stay for two meets all the right criteria for an incredible getaway. There are plenty of walks nearby suitable for a simple morning bathroom break for the hound, or hearty hill climbs through beautiful Scottish upland and past waterfalls and lochs. There are chocolate-box towns, with dog-friendly eateries, and fine local produce to craft up back at your modern kitchen. There’s even plenty of space to simply wind down and relax, just enjoying the company of the most important thing in your life as they munch on their treats. You could even spare some time for your partner too - if you fancy it. Hop into the copper bath and star-spot with a glass of something bubbly, or amber and smoky perhaps, and finish the day pleasantly tired, warm and snuggly, and eager to wake up and do it all over again.

You should know

There isn’t an enclosed garden at this space, however, there’s an enclosed veranda so dogs can get some air safely. There is also a field for dogs to roam next door to the huts, provided that there isn’t livestock in them
Other than handwash, toiletries aren’t provided – so don’t forget to pack your wash bag!
If your dog prefers to be closer to you than the floor, don’t forget to pack a throw or blanket so they can join you on the sofa or bed

Whilst you might like crafting meals with the local produce in your space, there are a few places to visit if you’re not feeling up to cooking. Up the road at Gatehouse of Fleet, there are a few dog-friendly places to grab some food with your hound. The Crafty Crow is an independent and locally-owned café which serves vegetarian food, including pizza that’s the talk of the town. You could also head to The Masonic Arms for local produce served up with style. During the summer months, there is also The Mill on the Fleet, a bookshop/café/museum that welcomes well-behaved dogs
This part of Scotland is sparsely populated, which is part of the appeal. This also means it can be quite a distance to the nearest attraction (as long as you don’t mean hills, moors, lochs and the wild). If you head northeast to Castle Douglas, you can visit the nearby eateries, stock up on bits and bobs at the shops, and, most importantly, see some sights. There’s the Threave Gardens and Estate, just outside Castle Douglas – which is the only Scottish garden dedicated to the training of horticulturists. It's also home to wetland nature reserves, Scotland’s only bat reserve and is one of Scotland’s most biodiverse areas. Dogs on leads are welcome in the garden but not allowed in the Walled Garden, Kelton Hill Wood or the play area
Getting away for a few days is a great way to refocus when you can’t see the woods for the trees. So ironically, it’s probably time to spend a minute in a forest. Nearby, there’s the Kirroughtree Forest, 21 minutes north, below Newton Stewart. There’s a visitor centre and café, multiple hiking routes, biking routes, wild hides to spot the abundant wildlife, and best of all, it welcomes dogs, even in the café and visitor centre
Kirroughtree is a part of the larger Galloway Forest Park, which also includes another two visitor centres: Glentrool, where there’s a similar set-up to Kirroughtree, as well as Clatteringshaws – which, whilst it doesn’t have the same amount of biking trails, does have hikes, a visitor centre and café, and some great views of, and walks around, the loch
If you’re looking for a hike, head to Glen Trool and take the enjoyable 5-mile amble on the complete circuit around the tranquil Loch Trool. For a slightly shorter, but still as scenic, visit Clatteringshaws Loch and see the Bruce's Stone before climbing through woodland to a viewpoint with sights of Merrick and the surrounding hills.
There are few places in the world like the coastal paths and beaches of rural Scotland. From your stay at 3 Little Huts, you can head east for 50 minutes to Sandyhills beach – a massive sandy (surprise) beach that’s amazing for walks. To its right, there’s also the Southerness Beach, another massive sandy stretch great for walks, and best of all, both are open to dogs all year round.
