Why we love it

A romantic old stone cottage in The Peak District, where you and the dog can hunker down by the wood burner or explore the hills for miles

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • A quick tour of the “yarden” first thing in the morning
  • Finding the arrival treats and their very own bed
  • Walks into the Peaks right from the door

Humans will love

  • The timeless feel of the cosy cottage
  • Swanning around the gardens of Chatsworth House
  • The pubs and bars within walking distance

The place

You can run wild or live slow and easy at this cottage in the quiet Peak District village of Eyam. Choose between gentle strolls to the village pub, quiet walks around the gardens of nearby Chatsworth Park, cake raids into Bakewell, or long hikes into the Peaks. Being right in the national park means you can ditch the car for your stay, or even completely - arriving by train from Manchester in a couple of hours or even London in only three. A fenced and walled “yarden”, along with the bed, bowls, blankets and treats provided mean your dog will be in perfect comfort, while you (hopefully) claim the big armchair by the wood burner. Once you’re settled in, it’s up to you whether you spend long days roaming the hills or do nothing more than wander round the village enjoying the peace.

In the neighbourhood

  • Walk from the door: Head left out of the front door, through the village and up the nook, where you’ll find a dirt track perfect for off-lead walks through the woods. Turn left and enjoy the stream or carry on straight and you’ll eventually pop out at the top where the views will take your breath away.
  • The Miners Arms in Eyam is a two-minute walk, The Bulls Head in Foolow is 30 minutes’ walk, but The Packhorse in Little Longstone, 5 miles away, is our favourite!
  • Chatsworth House & Gardens, 16-minute drive. The gardens at Chatsworth are immaculate, but your dog will probably be more interested in the 1,000 acres of parkland the estate also offers. You’re welcome to stroll both (on lead) and there are cafes where you can get takeaway drinks and snacks.
  • Monsal Trail, 11-minute drive. This 11km hiking and cycling route runs from Chee Dale to Hassop. It’s easy terrain and well signed, but long tunnel sections and passing over the Monsal Viaduct might spook your dog!
  • Longshaw Estate, 13-minute drive. There’s more great walking to be had here, but it’s more tumbling streams and ancient woodland than country park gardens. Dogs will need to be on a lead, but there’s still plenty to snuffle and scrabble over.
