Why we love it

In the centre of the North Devon AONB, there’s outdoor cooking on the stove and pizza oven, and relaxation in the wood-fired hot tub and hammock

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • Roaming the six acres on site and the private 14 acres adjacent
  • Becoming king or queen of the enclosed garden
  • Trying to escape shower time in the outdoor warm dog bath

Humans will love

  • Watching the sun go down from beside the outdoor stove
  • Movie night, in the master bedroom, with the film projector
  • (Mistakenly) making the case for pineapple, as they make use of the pizza oven

The place

It’s easy to spend too long marvelling at the beauty of The Nest treehouse, you may well be distracted by everything else on offer. The gold bath in the bedroom, the outdoor bath on the terrace, super king-size bed, wood burner and underfloor heating make it tempting never to even venture outdoors, but once your four-legged friend makes a bathroom request, you’ll struggle to head back inside. Once you’ve taken the dog for a stroll of the 20 acres on site, you’ll spot your private courtyard – complete with your wood-fired hot tub, the pizza oven, the outdoor stove and the double hammock for day’s end. If you make use of the North Devon AONB to its fullest, and take some days out, come back, freshen up in the wet room, and collapse in front of the movie projector for the full relaxing effect of The Nest.

In the neighbourhood

  • Being right on the edge of Devon, by the border to Cornwall, the Sleepy Owl Estate is placed in the middle of a goldmine of wild spaces. You can head to either Sandymouth beach 20 minutes away, Crooklet Beach 30 minutes away or Saunton Sands 54 minutes away – all dog friendly all year round. There are however, plenty more beaches nearby, just check seasonal restrictions on when dogs are allowed
  • You can take the half hour drive down to the Tamar Lakes near Kilkhampton, and spend the day trying out some water sports on the lake, including kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and fishing. You’ll need to keep your dog on a lead, and out of the water – as the blue green algae can be dangerous for them!
  • There’s a number of village pubs in walking distance, The Hart inn, The King’s Arms, and The Anchor – all serving classic pub fare, and dog friendly
  • There’s also many pubs and restaurants within driving distance that are worth the extra miles, there’s The Royal George in Appledore – 33 minutes away, and renowned for both its incredible position on the seafront, and its mouth-watering menu. There’s also the Johns of Instow café, serving locally roasted coffee, traditional to adventurous fare and both, very dog friendly
  • Take a drive out to the coastline, and walk the length of the coast, from Blackchurch Rock to the visually stunning Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall, which trails off of the nearby rolling hills, and down to the sea
  • This section of the Hartland Devon Heritage coast is an hour’s walk away and there’s streams, hills and fields to explore with your four-legged friend. You’ll be lost for where to start.
