    Why we love it

Surrounded by South Devon AONB, this little slice of countryside comes with a hot tub and hammock on deck, within a few steps of your al fresco dining area

    What you'll love

    Dogs will love

    • Settling into their bed left out for them
    • Doing laps of the estate on the wooded walk around site
    • Washing off the day’s adventure in the dog wash station

    Humans will love

    • Catching up on the bestseller in the hammock
    • Whiling away an afternoon in the communal games barn
    • Letting the sunset unfold as they sink into the hot tub

    The place

Aligned in a row with her sister lodges, Oak shepherd’s lodge is a great place from which to explore the South Devon AONB from, though you might find it hard to leave the site! About a mile from the River Dart, and close to numerous beaches, days out are in abundance. Whilst you can take an early morning dog walk round the wooded path that encircles the estate to run off some of that energy your companion built up overnight, there’s also masses to do nearby. Pick between picnics by the river, al fresco lunches on your outdoor dining area, hikes across Devon hills, or dreamy half-naps in the two-person hammock on your deck. Whether you work up a sweat, or surrender to downtime, you’ve got a modern kitchen to whip up a feast for dinner, and a hot tub to sip digestifs in afterwards.

    In the neighbourhood

    • The Sportsman’s Arms, a short walk away at the end of the road, is very dog friendly, as is the Ferry Boat Inn in Dittisham, a mile and a half or so to the east
    • The Dartmouth Steam Railway, which runs nearby, is your chance to chug along on a piece of history. If your dog doesn’t mind the whistle and rattle, they can join you for the price of a £2 dog ticket. The steam network connects Dartmouth, Totnes, Paignton, Torquay, Brixham and Kingswear, and some routes allow you to “steam & cruise” going out by train and back by boat
    • Dartmoor is a fantastic place to explore even though dogs need to be kept on leads thanks to ground nesting birds, wild ponies and grazing livestock. There are informative, scenic and dog-friendly walks available through the company Moorland Guides
    • This being coastal Devon, there are plenty of beaches to choose from, but a local favourite for dogs is Strete Gate, which has no restrictions at any time of year, so the only private places you need to keep out of are those of the nudists who frequent the northern end
    • The National Trust property of Coleton Fishacre has a stunning garden that rights down to the coast. You can arrive the normal way, through the car park, or hike to it along the coastal path and up to the café for refreshment. Dogs need to be kept on leads and can’t go into the main house, but it’s still a lovely way to snuffle up an hour or two
    • Totnes is already a lovely town to pop into, but when the market’s on, it’s a must-see. The town square fills with stalls selling food and produce, the air with delicious smells. There’s no actual rule that your dog needs to be on a lead, but unless you want to wrestle it back out of the remains of a charcuterie stand, it might be a good idea.
