The place

In the midst of a wooded valley, with the treetops tickling the balcony, sits Owl Treehouse, along with her sister treehouses. To make your way indoors, you’ll have to pass the double hammock outside, perfect for afternoons swinging in the breeze, giant outdoor games for little and big people alike, and a hot tub – for everything from mid-afternoon naps to warm, bubbly stargazing. You’ll also be able to tuck into your culinary masterpieces at the outdoor dining table under a parasol. You can while away a day inside as easily as outdoors, flicking through your holiday reading by the log burner and, should you return bedraggled from the beach, luxuriating in the power shower. Kick back on the deck, barbecue a feast, and maybe spare a morsel for your four-legged companion.

You should know

The bunk beds are only suitable for under 16s (sorry guys, you just won’t fit)
Some paths on site are quite steep and might not suit those with mobility issues

The Dartmouth Steam Railway, which runs nearby, is your chance to chug along on a piece of history. If your dog doesn’t mind the whistle and rattle, they can join you for the price of a £2 dog ticket. The steam network connects Dartmouth, Totnes, Paignton, Torquay, Brixham and Kingswear, and some routes allow you to “steam & cruise” going out by train and back by boat
Dartmoor is a fantastic place to explore even though dogs need to be kept on leads thanks to ground nesting birds, wild ponies and grazing livestock. There are informative, scenic and dog-friendly walks available through the company Moorland Guides
This being coastal Devon, there are plenty of beaches to choose from, but a local favourite for dogs is Strete Gate, which has no restrictions at any time of year, so the only private places you need to keep out of are those of the nudists who frequent the northern end
The Sportsman’s Arms, a short walk away at the end of the road, is very dog friendly, as is the Ferry Boat Inn in Dittisham, a mile and a half or so to the east
The National Trust property of Coleton Fishacre has a stunning garden that rights down to the coast. You can arrive the normal way, through the car park, or hike to it along the coastal path and up to the café for refreshment. Dogs need to be kept on leads and can’t go into the main house, but it’s still a lovely way to snuffle up an hour or two
Totnes is already a lovely town to pop into, but when the market’s on, it’s a must-see. The town square fills with stalls selling food and produce, the air with delicious smells. There’s no actual rule that your dog needs to be on a lead, but unless you want to wrestle it back out of the remains of a charcuterie stand, it might be a good idea.
