    The place

Just a few miles from the Bodmin Area of Natural Beauty, Poacher’s Pocket is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city living and enjoy that special version of the quieter life that seems unique to Cornwall. There are plenty of little lanes and local paths and trails to wander, like the Camel Trail which runs alongside the Camel River for miles of safe, traffic-free cycling or walking. This is a traditional cottage, which you’ll find flanked by other cottages, in a little community of slate terraces. Inside, it’s light and airy, and easy to settle down to relax in, with a wood burner for those late-night cuddles with your dog. There’s plenty of room to manoeuvre in the kitchen/lounge area, and it’s well stocked and ready to craft some great meals from local Cornish produce.

    In the neighbourhood

    • Pop around the corner to the St Tudy Inn, under a ten-minute drive, or a three-and-a-half-mile walk if you fancy stretching everyone’s legs. The food is traditional in theme, local in sourcing, and artistic in its presentation. It’s a quick romp through a tasteful selection of Cornwall’s best, and worth every mile to get there!
    • If you’re one for literary history, then it’s just a 20-minute drive to the Jamaica Inn, the smuggler’s tavern that inspired a lost Daphne Du Maurier to write the classic adventure story. The inn certainly leans into its theme, with a museum and gift shop as well as a bar and rooms. Dogs are welcome throughout
    • It’s a 40-minute drive to Tintagel Castle, a stunning spot to explore for an afternoon. Built between the mainland and a spur of rock, it now sports a fabulous new footbridge which might unnerve dogs and some humans. Well worth the drive for some fresh coastal air. Whilst you’re there, pop down to Merlin’s cave, or the National Trust Park at Glebe Cliff
    • If you need to stock up on some tasty ingredients, then you’re in luck. There’s the St Kew Farm Shop & Café – where you’ll find much more than just great local food. Opened in 2017, there’s a range of homewares, plants, jewellery and more, and even a café to settle down with a coffee with the hound
    • You just can’t be this close to Bodmin Moor and not have a little explore. At four miles to the border of this AONB, it’s an easy drive and a doable walk. You’ll find wild moorland ponies, miles of heather and more importantly, lovely walks. There are quite a number of sights to take in, with a few hills, amazing rock formations and stone circles to spot on your way
    • Nobody hears Cornwall and doesn’t think ‘sea’. There are loads to choose from, with Polzeath and Daymer Bay just a 30-minute drive away – both great spots to go surfing. Alternatively, head south for 40 minutes towards Fowey, and explore Polkerris Beach. There are some seasonal restrictions to check, but if you do visit, head to Sam’s for some great al fresco dining.
