The place

Tucked away in the Exeter countryside, Poppy’s Cottage is on the larger Sherwood Gardens estate, 15 acres containing flower gardens and surrounded by woodland. The cottage is down its own private lane and makes for the perfect hideaway to explore Exeter, with the city being only a 15-minute drive away. It sleeps six, and whether you’re corralling kids or just a group of friends, there’s plenty to do nearby and even more on site. Have ping pong duals in the barn, take turns cooking in the well-equipped kitchen or keep your fitness at its peak with the private gym. If you’re needing more R&R than adventure, take it easy on the many walks from the door with your four-legged friend, and end the day in the bath, or take the role of grill-master on the BBQ and spend a sunny afternoon doling out smoky snacks.

In the neighbourhood

  • It would be pretty odd if we didn’t start with Exeter, given that it’s just six miles away! If you’re looking for a little adventure, you might start by contacting Saddles and Paddles, bike and paddlesports (SUP, kayak and canoe) hire company and arranging a canoe for you and your dog! They allow seafaring four-legged friends in the canoes
  • Take the Exeter Green circle walk with your dog - a 12-mile walking route round the city that covers country footpaths as well as the metropolitan streets, touring the beautiful green spaces and the historic buildings alike. You can also head to Barley Valley Nature Reserve and enjoy the 11 hectares of rolling hills with your dog by your side
  • In Exeter city centre, there are plenty of dog-friendly places to go and grab anything from breakfast, lunch or dinner to just an incredible flat white. With a pub garden that leads out onto the water, incredible interior design and a menu that ranges from pub classics, to seafood, to international dishes, The Mill on Exe is a must visit! You could also head out to Double Locks, another waterside venue that serves pub classics to yourself, and treats to your dog. As for coffee, you’ll struggle NOT to find great cafes in Exeter, but for a change, head to Sacred Grounds for incredible vegan food, and even better coffee!
  • If you push past Exeter, and head on out to the coast where the River Exe widens, and Exmouth looks out on the sea. You'll find a sandy stroll on the beach (check dog restrictions), a tour of the town or even a walk around The Maer – a nature reserve just seconds from the beach. There are also plenty of dog friendly places to eat in Exmouth. For award-winning hospitality, head over to The Point, Restaurant and Bar on the marina for some incredible seafood, and a warm welcome to dogs and small humans alike
  • When you’re 45 minutes to the Dartmoor National Park, you just can’t pass up the opportunity. With long walks across the moors, the pubs dotted across its iconic landscape, and wild ponies as well as many other animals wandering about, it’s an amazing place to spend the day. You could also head to Haldon Forest Park, 3500 acres of woodland, and just a short 15-minute drive from Exeter. It’s criss-crossed with running trails, if your dog likes a chase, and they’re waymarked for ease, with 1km to 10km routes on offer
  • Also inside Dartmoor, you’ll find the Burrator Reservoir, a stunning combo of water and woodland to explore. With plenty of walks, as well as fishing (you'll need a permit), abandoned farms, ex-mining sites and SSSIs to find! If you’re also wondering how to explore the area with an older, or short-legged dog, some Dartmoor bike hire centres offer ‘dog-chariots’, so they can tag along on your bike rides with you!
