Why we love it
Days exploring the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast or Westward Ho! on windswept walks, and nights cooking over the firepit tripod, or star spotting from the wood-fired hot tub
What you'll love
Dogs will love
- Looking underfed as you cook on the fire tripod
- Sniffing out the treats left for them
- Taking strolls around the dog-walking field
Humans will love
- Competing at the outdoor games left for you
- Nights around the firepit, or by the wood burner
- Star spotting from the wood-fired hot tub
The place
Dogs will be spoilt for space at this cabin hideaway – with not only a large, enclosed garden to trot about in, sniffing out the boundaries – but also access to an enclosed field to stretch the legs! When you’re not wandering around on site, exploring the woods or taking naps in the meadow – you’ll find a lot on your doorstep to do. It’s a half hour to the coast, with Peppercombe Beach or Westward Ho! on offer for ear-flapping strolls with the hound, or mad dashes across the sands. There’s also Dartmoor just under an hour away if your four-legged friend prefers a heathery hike. Once you’re back at your space after a long day of exploration, there’s activities galore. Sunny afternoons will beg a go at the outdoor games, and afternoons will be tempting to give fire tripod cooking sessions (to the backdrop of a big-eyed dog). When the evening comes, you’ve got even more to do. On cooler nights, you’ll set yourself up by the wood burner, but when it’s warmer, you’ll be out by the firepit, or star spotting from the wood-fried hot tub.
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the door: The owner’s field! Turn left out of cabin garden, down their lane for about 100 meters, until you reach the gate to the field on the left-hand side. When you enter the field, please close the gate behind you
- The Boathouse, Instow: Championing local ingredients, The Boathouse at Instow is a great spot to head to for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Finish off with a quick walk on Instow Beach to let it all settle (just be sure to check the seasonal restrictions)
- Westward Ho!, 30-minute drive: Whether you’re thinking of a little surf, or just a wander up and down this pebbly and sandy stretch – this is a great spot for ear-flapping walks. It generally allows dogs with some summer restrictions
- The Farmer’s Arms, 15-minute drive: This is a spot unlike many others. With twists on tradition, the décor is enough to merit a visit, let alone the blazing log fire or the plot-to-plate menu of rare-breed and heritage meats.
