Why we love it
A secluded spot by the river to settle down with the dog. Swing in the hammock in the enclosed garden or cosy up by the wood burner
"Our two labradors settled in immediately"
A very cosy place to stay, beautifully designed and decorated and the owner was most welcoming. There are wonderful dog walks along the river and a very thoughtful hose outside for washing the dogs off. Our two labradors settled in immediately.

The place
Keeping people cosy for 100 years, The Batman’s Summerhouse is a hand-built dog-friendly cabin, sitting on an idyllic private stretch of riverbank. At the heart of the cabin, you'll find the large kitchen with ideal for cooking up a fabulous meal and a secret gin cupboard to help yourself to afterwards. With full bellies, you and the dog can slump on one of the squishy sofas by the wood burner, or take a nap in the hammock in the enclosed garden and listen to the flow of the river. There's a double bedroom downstairs and two singles in the upstairs room that is accessed from secret steps behind the fire hearth. Outside you'll find Adirondack chairs with a river view and a BBQ for al fresco cooking. The 200 meters of river just below the cabin belongs to the owner so you can test your fishing skills if you fancy it (with a day license).
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the front door: You're in the middle of eight acres of woodland to explore. Take the riverside walk to Avon Mill (40 minutes) or find the South Devon Coast Path (20 minutes).
- The Crabshell Inn Kingsbridge, 20-minute drive. Settle down for a spot of lunch on the river with seasonal menus, famed pizzas and an excellent drinks selection – dogs welcome in the bar.
- South Milton Beach, 25-minute drive. Have a wander on the sand with an eager dog in tow (or dragging you along), and stop for a bite at The Beach House café, right on the sand.
- Bigbury-on-Sea, 30-minute drive. At low tide you can walk from the main beach along the River Mouth to a very quiet and almost secret beach called Cockleridge. It has some dunes and is perfect for a swim!
