The place
It’s best to let the dog guide you when you’re at The Ivy. If they want to lounge in the snoozy warmth of the glass-roofed sunroom, join them. If they decide to stroll out into the 23-acres on site, go for it, you might meet guests and dogs from the other cottages while you’re out. When it feels like they’re ready for more exercise, take the little loop down the old railway tracks and along the banks of the Taf, leaping in for a swim when it gets too tempting. Treat them to the smells and sights of Cardigan bay, a sprint down Newport Sands or the views from the peaks of the Preseli Hills if they’re the really energetic type. They can’t join you in the hot tub, which is shared with the other cottages, but they can on the sofa, with a blanket down and all of you cuddled up together in a cosy, relaxed heap after a day of adventures in the fresh air of the Prembrokeshire countryside.
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the front door: A wonderful 40 minute circular walk - leave the cottage by the front door, walk down the steps to the pasture, follow the stream to the left to Peachey Pond and walk along the disused railway track following the river Taf. Come up the small country lane and back to Wellstone Cottages.
- Newport Sands, 20-minute drive: A beautiful, dune-backed beach which is dog-friendly all year round. The southern end is nearest the estuary, so great for bird spotting but maybe not so great if you’ve got a chaser.
- The Golden Road: A 4-hour (one way) challenging hike along the ridge of the nearby Preseli Hills, with stunning scenery in every direction. One for the experienced walkers and hardier breeds!
- Cardigan, 15-minute drive: A pleasant seaside town in which to while away a couple of hours wandering the shops, sniffing round the harbour and eating ice cream on the waterfront.
