The place
Just a stone’s throw from The River Esk, this chocolate-box cottage is straight out of your countryside daydreams. Found near the Yorkshire coast, there’s inland and coastal adventures right on your doorstep. Spend a few days living the good life, enjoying breakfast out in the sun at the al fresco table, and after, wandering round the walled garden with a cup of coffee and the hound at your side. You’ve got choices galore for the day, so decide on walks straight from the door, salt-sprayed adventures in nearby Whitby or even a drive over to the Yorkshire Moors for a day out the dog won’t forget. If you can’t part with the idyllic surrounds, or the dog’s cottoned on to the laid-back atmosphere, you can simply enjoy cooking up everything you don’t have time for at home on the aga, taking little strolls along the Esk, or hopping to the local dog-friendly pubs for a bite to eat if cooking sounds like too much hard work.
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the door: Turn left on Barnards Toll Road – when you reach the white house on the right, cross over The River Esk. Follow the fields up into woodland marked, "Private Egton Estate". Follow the path through that will drop down into Egton Bridge. Once on the road, turn right and follow until you see the Gate to Barnards toll Road
- Runswick Bay, 23-minute drive: A mix of sand and rockier areas, Runswick has around a kilometre of beach to enjoy mad dashes up and down the water’s edge. Head to The Royal Hotel for a bite to eat after, where the dogs are welcome too.
- The Horseshoe Hotel, 8-minute walk: Just a short wander from your space, The Horseshoe Hotel is right on the banks of The River Esk, serving a range of food and Yorkshire ales – and there’s even a farm shop right on the grounds!
- Whitby Beach, 18-minute drive: With plenty of open space to prance about on, this sandy stretch of coast is available to dogs if they stick to the south end. Take a wander on the sands and then explore Whitby for a pit stop.
