The place

You'll struggle to find a more perfect spot in Hay-on-Wye to settle in and enjoy this incredible part of the world. Tredegar House sits right in the heart of the town, by the clocktower. As great as the local area is, you’ll be torn on whether the town or your place is more gorgeous. Lovingly decorated, this blend of cottage and townhouse is filled with stunning features, so you'll find yourself calmly padding about on original floorboards, lying back in the modern bath or curling up by the wood burner admiring the wooden beams. Spend your days people-watching from the tables at a local haunt and then retire back to your place to soak up a little peace and quiet with the dog in the enclosed courtyard.

In the neighbourhood

  • For such a small town, Hay-on-Wye is packed full of culture, and you’ll discover it for yourself as you mosey around the old, cobbled streets. Hay’s famous for having a bookshop per 100 inhabitants, which is one of the highest ratios in the world, working out to 24 bookshops in total. Many of them allow dogs, so just pop in and check first
  • You must visit The Old Electric Shop, a small café and vintage shop just around the corner. They have vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free items on the menu and a gorgeous array of gifts. If you’re around for The Book Festival, they’re often open late – with a bar!
  • Feeling peckish, but not sure what to have? Head down to Tomatitos Tapas Bar, for fantastic food made from locally sourced ingredients like artisan bread and seasonal veg, or choose from the imported wines list. There’s even a garden to sit out in to enjoy your food, and let the dog sunbathe
  • Want to Canoe? A good question but also the name of a local canoe company. Take to the water for a little adventure on the scenic River Wye, spotting the wildlife as you go and enjoying the beautiful vistas on either side of the banks. And yes, they welcome dogs, just be sure yours likes boat rides first
  • If your dog isn’t the boat-faring kind then you might enjoy something a little more achievable – a nice dip at The Warren, a small rocky beach on the banks of the River Wye. There’s space for a picnic on the grassy bank, and a nice bit of river for a bracing plunge!
  • You can't visit Hay without paying a visit to The Black Mountains. It’s Wales’ second largest national park and is jam-packed with activities. From biking to hiking, wild swimming and paddleboarding to horse riding and climbing – you’ll find something to keep you and your dog entertained.
