Why we love it

A wooded walk encircling the entire site, South Devon’s rivers, moors and coast at every turn, and hammocks and hot tubs on deck

What you'll love

Dogs will love

  • Running free in the enclosed area below the treehouses
  • Finding every sight and smell on the wooded walk around the estate
  • Finding their bowl and treats on arrival

Humans will love

  • Whiling away the hours in the hot tub or the hammock
  • Crowning themselves grill-master after a go on the BBQ
  • Learning humility the hard way in the communal games room

The place

Woodpecker Treehouse has the same luxurious features as her sister treehouses, with one important caveat. Unlike her sisters, she has a gentle graduated slope to her balcony, instead of stairs. On said balcony, you’ll find your outdoor dining space, complete with parasol for breaks from the sun, when you finish grilling on the BBQ. With the enclosed area for dogs just below, there’s quite literally something for everyone within metres! Indoors, there’s a wonderfully open space, equipped with a modern kitchen, a dining area and a lounge angled around a crackling wood burner, as well as a walk-in shower to dust off the day’s adventure, and a king-size bed to collapse in. Whether you’re looking to settle into some lazy downtime, or for a base to explore South Devon, you’ll find what you need here.

In the neighbourhood

  • The Dartmouth Steam Railway, which runs nearby, is your chance to chug along on a piece of history. If your dog doesn’t mind the whistle and rattle, they can join you for the price of a £2 dog ticket. The steam network connects Dartmouth, Totnes, Paignton, Torquay, Brixham and Kingswear, and some routes allow you to “steam & cruise” going out by train and back by boat
  • This being coastal Devon, there are plenty of beaches to choose from, but a local favourite for dogs is Strete Gate, which has no restrictions at any time of year, so the only private places you need to keep out of are those of the nudists who frequent the northern end
  • The Sportsman’s Arms, a short walk away at the end of the road, is very dog friendly, as is the Ferry Boat Inn in Dittisham, a mile and a half or so to the east
  • Dartmoor is a fantastic place to explore even though dogs need to be kept on leads thanks to ground nesting birds, wild ponies and grazing livestock. There are informative, scenic and dog-friendly walks available through the company Moorland Guide
  • The National Trust property of Coleton Fishacre has a stunning garden that rights down to the coast. You can arrive the normal way, through the car park, or hike to it along the coastal path and up to the café for refreshment. Dogs need to be kept on leads and can’t go into the main house, but it’s still a lovely way to snuffle up an hour or two
  • Totnes is already a lovely town to pop into, but when the market’s on, it’s a must-see. The town square fills with stalls selling food and produce, the air with delicious smells. There’s no actual rule that your dog needs to be on a lead, but unless you want to wrestle it back out of the remains of a charcuterie stand, it might be a good idea.
