Garden Categories
Overview of our categories
So, you’ve spotted our ‘garden categories’, and now you’re wondering, what does that mean? What sort of garden can I expect when I arrive at a Paws & Stay place?
Everyone loves a good garden when they go away for a few days, but no one loves it more than your dog! That’s why we have come up with a few categories of the kind of garden you’ll encounter on our site, so you can make a more informed decision about where you and your other four-legged family members will be relaxing for your holiday.
Secure Garden
What this means
This garden setup offers a higher level of security, allowing dogs to enjoy outdoor space more securely and with less supervision. Whether you have a curious puppy, or a dog with a strong chase instinct, a well-fenced garden gives you the confidence to let your dog play, sniff, and relax outdoors. Please ensure gates are securely closed before letting your dog roam freely in the enclosed area.
Our definition
Secure gardens are just that, secure – fences at least 1.8 metres tall, with no gaps and equally secure gates. If your determined Houdini is a digger or has other tricks up their sleeves, we recommend some supervision.
What kind of dog is this best for?
This category is for energetic dogs, escape artists, reactive dogs or those still learning recall and for owners who prefer complete peace of mind during garden time.
Semi Enclosed Garden
What this means
A thoughtful balance between openness and security. Some may rely on natural boundaries, while others incorporate a low fence or simple gate. It’s ideal for dogs who enjoy outdoor space without a strong tendency to roam. With a bit of supervision, you can ensure your dog enjoys a safe and happy time in the garden.
Our definition
Semi-enclosed gardens might have either stock fencing under 1.8 metres, or dense hedging as a boundary. There might not be enough to contain a determined runner, but this is more for breeds who don't like to roam far, or have good recall. Have a browse of the collection and reach out to our Guest Experience Team if you need help finding the perfect match.
What kind of dog is this best for?
This category is for dogs who tend to stay close to their people, calm companions, or dogs less prone to jumping or squeezing through gaps.
Open Garden
What this means
An open garden offers a beautiful sense of space and freedom, ideal for dogs who enjoy calm outdoor time by your side. Perfect for countryside-loving pups or those used to staying close, this setup allows for relaxed time outdoors with attentive supervision. A great match for well-trained dogs who love a sniff and a sunbathe without the need to roam.
Our definition
Open gardens have minimal or no fences, walls or hedges, and are open to surrounding land, estate grounds or countryside.
What kind of dog is this best for?
This is the kind of spot that’s perfect for dogs who tend to stay close when outdoors. The kind of dogs used to open environments without boundaries. But of course, dogs should always be supervised, regardless!
Still unsure?
If you’re still unsure about what kind of garden would be best for your dog, or you’re simply curious to know more, then give our Guest Experience Team a call to get a better sense of where you’ll be spending a few days relaxing and enjoying yourself with your dog.
It will come as no surprise that dogs, like their humans, are all different. Whilst we've taken care to find out all the information you and your pet might need to know, we always recommend that you and your pet familiarise yourselves with the space on arrival and that dogs are supervised when in a new environment. Whilst we don’t agree with the adage ‘never work with children or animals’ – you can be sure a dog will find a new and unexpected way to be mischievous.
