The place
Just a stone’s throw from the golden sands of Gwithian Beach, Driftwood Lodge is the stuff of doggy daydreams. With walks from the door that can take you right to the ocean’s edge, access to the South West Coast Path just up the road and miles of dune and countryside to explore – this place is perfect for you and the dog. Driftwood Lodge is one of a few ‘shacks’ on site, but ‘shack’ doesn’t quite cut it when talking about a large, airy, well-lit space. There’s an L-shaped sofa for everyone to collapse on after a day surfing, large table for feasts – or to serve food at when you breeze indoors and out with the French doors. And of course, a BBQ out there to cook smoky treats on (and for the dog to pretend to be underfed by). Spend the evening by the wood burner or dipping in the hot tub and steaming in the sauna, as you relax those tired walking muscles, and the dog can go belly up in the last of the sunshine.
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the door: Exit the site and go right, walk through the dunes onto the beach, and then it takes you up around the headlands (it’s a loop) around 2.5 miles walk - when you reach Mutton Cove. There’s also a chance you might spy dolphin pods in St Ives Bay!
- Red River Inn, 23-minute walk: With a mix of pub classics and a range of world dishes, there’s something for everyone at Red River Inn. Spend a day at the beach, and an afternoon refuelling in the pub garden
- Porthtowan Beach, 22-minute drive: Should the miles of beach around you at St Ives not be enough, there’s miles of beach to explore all up and down the coast, but a short drive will take you to Porthtowan Beach – highly dog friendly, with pubs and restaurants nearby
- The Cove Café, 12-minute drive: A short drive down the road to Riviere Towans Beach, you can grab coffee and even some lunch before enjoying a wander on the sand. Just check for some seasonal restrictions on dogs!
