The place
Tucked away in St Mawgan, Lan Cottage couldn’t look more quintessentially British if it tried. With a thatched roof, whitewashed walls and a garden complete with hydrangeas – Lan looks like a daydream. Inside, the period interior might have low ceilings but it’s filled with light and airy spaces to revel in. Cook up the sea’s fresh catch in the modern kitchen and serve at the dining table to an eager family and a dog looking determinedly underfed beneath it. Days out here could look like hopping to the dog-friendly beach, especially given that it’s a simple five-minute drive to one, or just a little further to a handful of others. There’s also Newquay in easy reach, whichever you think an eager dog will enjoy more. But once they’ve had their proverbial treat, it’ll be time for yours, with a bath to enjoy at the end of the day.
In the neighbourhood
- Walk from the door: Turn right out of the cottage, take the first left, walk down the hill, cross the ford, and then walk past the local tearoom/post office and turn left, and then the woods are on your right. Or turn right out of the cottage, and follow the road to its end, go straight / veer left, at the end of the road follow the signpost to Mawgan Porth to the beach
- The Falcon Inn, 6-minute walk: Blending traditional pub food with a mix of worldly dishes – and the all-important Sunday roasts, this spot is perfect if you aren’t in the mood to cook
- Watergate Beach, 5-minute drive: With 2-miles of sandy beach to sprint on, this is an ideal spot to take the dog for an afternoon galloping around burning off energy. Dog-friendly year-round, it’s perfect all year round
- The Cornish Arms, 20-minute drive: Just outside Padstow, it’s a quick hop, skip and a jump away. Serving pub favourites all year round – and wood-fired pizzas in the summer it’s an obvious choice for a bite to eat
