The place

If you’re staying in Sussex, this is the place to come. Surrounded by miles of countryside to amble, hike and explore, you’ve plenty of walks straight from the doorstep to explore with your four-legged friend. Start the day with the French doors open, padding indoor and out with your tiny pal, letting them out into the acre of enclosed field to themselves to stretch their legs as you sip a cup of coffee and plan your day. You’ve the coast in easy reach, estates by the handful nearby and Brighton in a relatively short drive. When the day’s over, and your all adventured out, head back to luxury downtime, either bathing outdoors under a blanket of stars, or indoors, in the clawfoot bath, or waterfall wet room. It’s easy to wind down amongst the wild spaces, and find that calm you were looking for.

In the neighbourhood

  • Your nearest shop here is a Co-op 3.5 miles away in Partridge Green, but there’s a few more dotted around in the local towns. If you’re after some local ingredients, pop over to the Village Larder farm shop 12 minutes away north of Washington, and grab anything from fruit and veg, to meat, to local Sussex wines
  • A quick 1.3mi walk away, The Fountain in Ashurst has a great atmosphere, with regular live music nights and welcomes four-legged friends at the bar. There’s also The Partridge and Green Man, in Partridge Green ten minutes away, both dog friendly and well worth a visit
  • You’re just 2.8 miles from Knepp Castle Estate, and though you can’t visit inside the stately house (it’s a family home still), you can explore the 3,500 acres onsite with the criss-crossing public footpaths that even lead to tree viewing platforms. There is a lot of livestock around, so be sure to lead up where appropriate. If you’re looking for other estates to visit, you’d be hard pressed for a better idea than the Winston Estate, 7.7 miles away. Winery, farm and restaurant, it’s well worth a visit to tour the estate and pick up a bottle of wine for the evening. Though your dog can’t join you on a winery tour, they can however join you outside at the Calk Restaurant
  • You’re going to want to tire out that little hound one way or another, and one of the best ways to do so, is usually with a hearty walk. Take the 20 minute drive north to St Leonard’s Forest, just outside Horsham, for an afternoon out zooming through the pines with your tiny pal. Alternatively head east to Bedelands Nature Reserve to try desperately to keep your dog out of the water, to no avail
  • As deep as you feel in the countryside here, you’re actually only 20 minutes to the beach. Either take the short drive to Worthing, to Lancing Beach (no restriction all year round) or take a slightly longer drive to Brighton (40 minutes) and take your hound for a waterside walk any time from 1 October to 30 April
  • With more and more shops, restaurants, bars and so on allowing dogs, cities are quickly becoming an easier place for them to explore for a day out. With Brighton within 40 minutes drive, it’s worth popping out there for a day to explore the city. There’s plenty of dog-friendly restaurants in the city, as well as North Laine shops, which generally allow dogs as long as you ask first. It’s also worth checking out the enclosed dog park at Withdean, in the north of the city.
